Rummy 5000: How to Play

Friday, March 27, 2009

Basic Card DeckI've focused on video games lately. So, as some commenters' requested, here is some tabletop fun. How to play my favorite card game: Rummy 5000. The next post will explain Rummies, some special situations, and my "house rules" to handle them.

You Need

  • Basic 52 card deck
  • 2 or more people
  • pen and paper for scoring

Main Objective

Reach 5000 points

Before Playing

Cut the cards to see who deals first. Aces are high.

Dealing

The dealer, wild card, and amount of cards dealt changes each hand.
  • Deal the first person to the left one card face up.
  • Deal the amount of cards (face down) shown on the face up card. For cards 2-10 deal the number on the card. Deal 10 for face cards; 15 for Aces.
  • Repeat for each person.
  • After the dealer has his cards, the dealer gives himself one more card, face up.
  • This face up card determines the wild card for this round.
  • Set the remaining cards in a face down stack.
  • Flip over the top card (face up) beside the stack. This begins the discard pile.

Each Turn

  • The first person to dealer's left goes first.
  • Each turn, you may either draw a card from the stack or pick up a card (or cards) from the discard pile. *You may pick up the top card from the discard pile and add it to your hand. If you pick up cards farther down the pile, you must play the first card you pick up immediately.
  • Lay down your runs or sets. Runs have 3 or more cards of the same suit in consecutive order. Sets are 3 or more cards of the same number (or rank)
  • Play on other player's runs or sets. *You play these in your area, and count them as your points.
  • Discard one card to the discard pile.

Ending the Hand

  • Play until a person is out of cards at the end of their turn. *This includes the discard phase. If a person runs out of cards, but has not discarded, the hand continues. This person is now floating.
  • The first person to go out gets all the cards left in the other players' hands.

Scoring

Count all the cards you played during the hand. If you "went out," also count the cards given to you by other players.
  • Wild card = 200pts
  • Ace = 100pts
  • 2-7 = 5pts
  • 8-K = 10pts

Sounds like fun. I will have to try this game out some time. My favorite card game is Cribbage. I don't know many players here in NM, but it is very popular in Minnesota, where my father is from. Anyway, cool post, nice graphics, very informative.

Thank you for the rules, you were #2 when I googled how to play this game. How cool is that?!
Do you know how to play spades or hearts? You should blog about those as well and any other games you think of.

Very cool :) I do know spades. I actually haven't blogged in a very long time. I think you just gave me the motivation to begin again :)

wow, this is way different from the 5,000 that i play...
i play jokers and twos are wilds, there is no floating, and you are not required to play any cards that you pick up from the discard pile... however the person i learned from does tend to play the "street" versions of most card games, not the regular version

this is my favorite card game

i have been playing for over 25 years and your rules have only thre differences than what I was taught. so I have a couple Questions,
1. if you play with more than 3 people do you use more decks or just the one deck? and if no more what is max people to play?
2. i was taught to use the jokers as wilds and in scoring they are worth 50 pts do you think that is fine or ?
3. someone posted this once (ive been bamboozled. someone had me playing with jokers and they told me the wild cards get played anywhere!! OMG) the wild cards can be played anywhere right?

Useful information shared..I am very happy to read this post. Thanks for giving us this info. It is quite easy to learn.

This game is addicting. My aunt taught me this as a kid. Just the sheer unpredictability of the deal alone sells it.

This game does have several variations. For example if 4's are wild for the hand and you're spread of 3's you can use a 4 as your third 3 since it's wild. That is an actual variation of the game.

Online Rummy brings to you the digital version of the traditional 13 cards & 21 cards Indian rummy that can be played with ease on your desktops, laptops, tablets and mobiles.

No that card is now dead. So if you want to make a set with that number after you have killed it, you can use the other 3 cards of the same number or another wild card. But that card is out of rotation. Example: let's say your wild was replacing the 2 of hearts. In order for you or the other players to spread a set with 2's, it would have to be the 2's of spades, clubs, and diamonds. Or you could use wild cards to replace those cards too, but then they would also be dead. So you couldn't turn around and use them in a run.

Unknown said...

Yes, but then you would be killing the card you are replacing with the wild card, so it would be out of rotation.

Unknown said...

Me too, I have been playing with the points as follows.
Ace=75pts but if wild then 175pts
Wild=100pts
2-9=5pts
10,J,Q,K=10pts
I am so mad cause I've been losing points. Won't happen again though lol.

Unknown said...

You can't play with jokers though. The point of the game is for the dealer to not only find out how many cards to give each player by the first card that they deal to the person. Which means that you will never get the same amount of cards, but for the last card the dealer deals to themselves to be the wild card. This way the wild card is always different. It keeps it interesting. And the fact that there are only 4 means you really have to step up your game. But if it works for you, hey the point is to have fun right.

Unknown said...

Of course you can use the wilds anywhere, that's why they are wild cards. To replace the other cards you don't have so you can put down your runs and sets before the other players. Plus it sticks the other players because they can no longer use the card that is being replaced by the wild.

Question
Say a player spread is A-2-3 and another player spreads an A and 3 wild cards saying it’s all Aces
Is that acceptable ?
